President Donald Trump is making new threats in his trade war, promising a 25% tariff on India’s exports to the US starting Aug. 1. He also threatened an additional penalty over the country’s energy purchases from Russia.
Trump yesterday claimed in a social media post that India has tariffs that are “among the highest” in the world. The threatened levies may dash New Delhi’s hopes of preferential treatment over its Asian peers, who appear to have secured tariffs ranging from 15% to 20%. Trump, however, has repeatedly threatened tariffs against other countries and then backed down, ostensibly as party of a negotiating strategy. Indeed, the overall legality of Trump’s global trade war is the subject of litigation before the US Court of Appeals in Washington.
