Poland Swings Rightward With Nationalist Win

A nationalist candidate backed by President Donald Trump won Poland’s presidential election, defeating the centrist mayor of Warsaw in a blow to the the country’s current government. Karol Nawrocki, a historian and former boxer who has made clear his core Catholic values while railing against migration and the EU’s efforts to fight climate change, took 51% of the vote. Nawrocki’s victory jeopardizes efforts by pro-Europe Prime Minister Donald Tusk to return Poland to the EU mainstream and will test the country’s stance within the bloc in the face of Trump’s tariffs. Rafal Trzaskowski, an ally of Tusk who had made his second attempt at the presidency, took 49%. Poland’s zloty extended its drop against the euro in early trading today.
