US President Donald Trump said the ball was in China’s court. And now we have a better understanding of what it’ll take to get Beijing to the table. China is willing to agree to trade talks under the right terms, according to a person familiar with the Chinese government’s thinking.
First, there’s the matter of respect — and reining in disparaging remarks by members of his cabinet. Other conditions include a more consistent US position and a willingness to address China’s concerns around American sanctions and Taiwan. Beijing, which just named a new trade representative, also wants the US to appoint a point person for talks who has the US president’s support and can help prepare a deal that Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping can sign when they meet, the person said. The fate of the global economy and financial markets hinges in large part on finding a way to avoid a protracted trade war.
