If you’ve fully bought into the idea that American outperformance is a given, this weekend may be time for a rethink.

Why? Because that conventional wisdom is being firmly challenged as we speak. Year to date, the S&P 500 is only just hanging on to evens and the Nasdaq is down 4%. On the other side of the Atlantic, the Euro Stoxx 50 is up 11%, the DAX is up 12.7% and the CAC is up 9.3%. Even the FTSE 100 is in the black by almost 7%. The market momentum appears to have taken something of a turn. (US investing guru Jeremy Grantham explains all of this on our podcast this week).
