It’s a well-known trick in politics: the best time to bury news is a Friday evening. If you want to give your pal a peerage, release some awkward data, or admit that you won’t be funding a project you were previously committed to, there’s no better time than when reporters and readers alike have headed home or, let’s be honest, to the pub.

That doesn’t seem to have been the reason behind the timing of this evening’s breaking news, but it might offer a small modicum of comfort to the government nonetheless as it ponders Bloomberg’s report that Apple is removing its most advanced end-to-end encrypted security feature for cloud data in the UK.
