Here’s a thought exercise for you: What if the tariffs Donald Trump is threatening on imports from China and the rest of the world aren’t anywhere near big enough?

That’s what North American graphite producers are arguing anyway. In petitions filed in Washington late last night, an industry group representing nascent domestic graphite producers makes the case that they need the protection of new 920% duties on imports of Chinese graphite to develop into the alternative to China that Washington wants.
