Israel reached a 60-day cease-fire agreement with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, Joe Biden said. The deal follows weeks of talks mediated by the US, and it may pave the way to a more lasting truce after over a year of fighting. In the hours before Biden spoke, the Israeli air force conducted some of its heaviest strikes yet on Beirut. Oil prices dropped, reversing earlier gains.
