EU Envoys Tackle Solution for Russia Sanctions Extension

Welcome to the Brussels Edition, Bloomberg’s daily briefing on what matters most in the heart of the European Union.

EU envoys will try to converge today on a proposal to tweak the bloc’s Russian sanctions regime to unlock $50 billion in aid slated for Ukraine. A majority of member states seems open to changes. Among options on the table, extending the renewal period for sanctions to 36 months is seen as the most feasible. The adjustment is needed mostly to assuage American concerns about the current framework, under which sanctions are renewed every six months. Meanwhile, the government in Kyiv is growing increasingly impatient. Its latest warning concerns supplies of North Korean ammunition to Moscow, which a top Ukrainian general says are causing major headaches for the country’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
