Trump Tells ‘Lovely’ EU to Brace for Tariffs
Welcome to the Brussels Edition, Bloomberg’s daily briefing on what matters most in the heart of the European Union.
The EU “sounds so lovely,” Donald Trump told us in an interview at his Mar-a-Lago club. “We love Scotland and Germany. We love all these places. But once you get past that, they treat us violently.” In a conversation with Bloomberg Businessweek about his foreign- and economic-policy agendas, which took place before the assassination attempt, Trump warned that it’s not just China that can expect additional trade tariffs if he’s re-elected. He’ll plan to add a 10% across-the-board levy on imports from other countries, illustrating his frustration by recounting an exchange with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel about the scarcity of Ford and Chevrolet cars in central Munich. Meanwhile, Trump’s pick for vice president, JD Vance, is fueling European anxiety over the future of US support for Ukraine.
