Google’s self-proclaimed moonshot factory “X” is quietly coming back down to earth. Since its founding, the renowned research lab has intrigued with visions of a techno-utopian world it would help build with speculative inventions like exoskeletons and internet balloons. But more than a decade on, Alphabet is ending the era of unrestrained exploration, and spinning off many projects into independent startups.
