The two countries, major consumers and producers of oil, got an assurance of safe passage through the region following talks between their diplomats and Mohammed Abdel Salam, one of the Yemen-based group’s top political figures, according to people with knowledge of the discussions.
In exchange, the countries may provide political support to the Houthis in bodies such as the United Nations Security Council, according to the people. It could include blocking more resolutions against the group.
