No One Is Ever Ready to Be the Next CEO of Disney

None of the four leading candidates has the perfect resume for the top job. Neither did Bob Iger when he was first named CEO.

Media and Technology Conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, US, on Thursday, July 13, 2023. The summit is typically a hotbed for etching out mergers over handshakes, but could take on a much different tone this year against the backdrop of lackluster deal volume, inflation and higher interest rates.Photographer: David Paul Morris/Bloomberg

Good afternoon from sunny Los Angeles. My colleague Kurt Wagner has a new book out about X/Twitter. It started off as a book about the app’s co-founder and former CEO, Jack Dorsey, but plans changed when Elon Musk bought the company. I co-hosted a book party for Kurt this past week and have included some of his comments about the state of social media below. (You can buy his book here.)

I also went on Derek Thompson’s podcast to talk about the state of the movie business. (Our conversation is a natural complement to last week’s newsletter.) As always, you can reach me at lshaw31@bloomberg.net. And if you don’t subscribe to this newsletter, you should do so here.
