EU to Enact AI Law Despite Lingering Doubts

EU lawmakers are expected to pass the bloc’s AI Act today, ratifying the world’s most comprehensive rules for the fast-changing technology. Members of the European Parliament want the law to ensure the use of artificial intelligence respects fundamental human rights. But the recent news that Mistral — the French OpenAi competitor that argued the act could limit the EU’s ability to compete with US companies — partnered with Microsoft raised concerns even among some of the law’s architects that the EU isn’t going far enough to control the technology.
