Microsoft’s OpenAI Ties Under EU Spotlight

Welcome to the Brussels Edition, Bloomberg’s daily briefing on what matters most in the heart of the European Union.

Microsoft’s $13 billion investment in OpenAI risks a full-scale EU probe, placing even greater scrutiny on the ChatGPT owner, which has been working to contain the tumult created by CEO Sam Altman’s recent firing and rehiring. The European Commission followed UK regulators in announcing that it would examine whether the deal should be formally investigated, which could result in an order to unwind the investments. The news comes before EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager travels to the United States this week, where she will meet with OpenAI officials, as well as Apple chief Tim Cook and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
