Britain suffers from some deep economic problems. Swathes of people have still not returned to the workforce following the pandemic, with businesses and public services endlessly complaining of a shortage of labour. Growth forecasts are abysmal while, like many peer countries, we face a demographic timebomb due to an ageing population and the politically-untouchable “triple lock” that keeps increasing the cost of pensions.

Economists will tell you there’s no easy way to fix such a situation without magically conjuring up a few million extra working-age people.
