Tesla Looms Large in EU Anti-Subsidy Probe
Welcome to the Brussels Edition, Bloomberg’s daily briefing on what matters most in the heart of the European Union.
The EU’s investigation into Chinese electric-vehicle subsidies has raised tensions with the Asian country and rippled across the auto sector. We’ve now learned that it may ensnare the Chinese exports of US carmaker Tesla. During the evidence-gathering that precipitated Ursula von der Leyen’s surprise announcement of the probe, Tesla was among the companies found to have likely benefited. The subsidy issue featured heavily during EU trade chief Valdis Dombrovskis’s trip to China, where he sought to stabilize relations and limit fallout. The EU has more decisions looming on its EV trade policies. Officials will meet with British counterparts today to discuss post-Brexit plans to impose a tariff on trade in EVs with the UK, as a deadline on whether to delay the move nears.
