Hi, it’s Fiona in New York. It’s been a record-breaking summer in parts of the world. Does sunscreen hold up to extreme heat? I wanted to find out. But first …

This summer, devastating weather events — from wildfires to hurricanes — have dominated the news. July 2023 was the hottest month recorded since record keeping began in 1880, according to scientists at NASA. And it’s not just this year. Scorching summers are likely to become our new normal.

The impact of this will be far-reaching. But I was curious about a less obvious side effect of extreme heat: how it impacts our ability to protect ourselves from the sun.
