The aviation industry is about to hand passengers a multi-trillion dollar bill to fight its next existential threat after the Covid-19 pandemic: decarbonization. Neutralizing emissions from about 25,000 planes in the world’s commercial fleet is becoming more urgent. Meeting the challenge by 2050 could require about $5 trillion of capital investment — and that ultimately means higher fares.
