Any concern that the awkward schedule for US viewers to watch this year’s FIFA World Cup would damp interest likely evaporated Friday evening, when more than 6 million viewers tuned in to watch the US Women’s National Team defeat Vietnam, 3-0, in its first match at Eden Park stadium in Auckland, New Zealand. It was a strong showing considering the suboptimal time–the largest audience ever, including the English and Spanish-language telecasts, for a group stage match.
