Nowadays, companies can’t stop talking about how they’re driven by a higher calling than the almighty dollar. Colgate-Palmolive’s marketing of its toothpaste is purpose driven. Lab-supplies maker Danaher is in the midst of a “purpose-driven portfolio transformation.” At health-care giant AmerisourceBergen, meanwhile, nearly everything is purpose driven: Its culture, teams, even its financial results.
