It’s not just because of deep, deep holiday discounts. The amount consumers pay for everything from hotel stays to medical care dropped last month, according to data published this week by the Labor Department. Energy had a lot to do with the decline: An American family filling up their 16-gallon tank today would pay about $52.20 for gasoline, versus $80.20 back in June. Airfares also fell.
