LA Port Chief Wants to Recapture Cargo Lost to East, Gulf Coasts

Port of Los Angeles Sees Traffic Plummet in September

September was the quietest month since June 2020 at Port of Los Angeles, traditionally the busiest seaport in the US, as carriers diverted cargo eastern and southern hubs to avoid potential disruptions should dockworker contract talks that are now in their fifth month turn sour.

And while a labor deal between 22,000 employees at West Coast ports and their employers may take “several months” to reach, service disruptions at LA while negotiations continue are unlikely, said Executive Director Gene Seroka, who wants that eastbound cargo back at his port.
