This is a special daily brief on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, one of the most urgent security crises in Europe since World War II.
The European Union is moving to tighten the economic screws on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, proposing to ban Russian crude oil over the next six months and refined fuels by the end of the year.
The Kremlin called the plan a “double-edged sword” for the EU. “In seeking to cause us harm, they also pay a high price,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
