As Russia stopped natural gas flows to Poland and Bulgaria on Wednesday for refusing President Vladimir Putin’s demand to pay in rubles, some European companies have already made payments in the Russian currency, a source says.

The European Union said its gas coordination group was meeting to chart a joint response to Russia’s decision to use gas supplies as “blackmail.” Gas prices pared gains, as traders bet that top-buyer Germany will continue to receive shipments from Russia.
