The geopolitical ramifications of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are still unfolding. We’re told that Germany is debating whether to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Group of Seven summit it’s hosting in June, given the country’s reluctance to condemn President Vladimir Putin over the war. India was among the more than 50 countries that abstained from a vote to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, and it has not imposed sanctions on the country. On top of that, India is a significant buyer of Russian weapons and there are even signs it may have increased oil imports, benefiting from a knock-down price. But it goes to highlight how difficult it will be to completely isolate Russia from the global economic system.
