Next China: A Lockdown Shocks Shanghai
Shanghai’s decision to lock down the financial hub shocked many of its 25 million residents, who after two years of living relatively unhindered lives had thought such sweeping restrictions would never hit their city.
When it did, there was a rush to to grocery stores with videos of people hoarding food and getting into fistfights at supermarkets making the rounds on Chinese social media. Concerns also mounted that those suffering non-Covid related illnesses wouldn’t be able to get the care they need. Kidney disease patients who need dialysis treatment were one group that took to social media to raise awareness of their plight.
