The West Vows to Turn the Screws on Russia

U.S. President Joe Biden faces a key test of his ability to project influence in the biggest European security crisis in decades as he visits the continent and pushes for tougher sanctions to punish Russia for invading Ukraine. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said more restrictions are on the way.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged Japanese lawmakers to expand their already unprecedented sanctions regime against Russia, saying he needed more help to turn back the “tsunami of brutal invasion.” He’ll take part via video in this week’s special NATO summit.
On a mainly static front, Russian forces are regrouping in the face of stiffer-than-expected resistance from Ukraine’s military. Kyiv said the evacuation of civilians from the besieged southern port of Mariupol continued, but about 100,000 people remain there under bombardment.
