Welcome to the Hyperdrive daily briefing, decoding the revolution reshaping the auto world, from EVs to self-driving cars and beyond.

In July 2016, Tesla CEO Elon Musk published his “Master Plan, Part Deux,” an opus that laid out his ambitions for Tesla’s next phase of growth. It’s worth revisiting and likely will be studied by MBA programs for years to come. Tesla is no longer a tiny startup taking on the legacy automakers in Detroit, Germany and Japan — it joined the S&P 500 in December and delivered roughly 200,000 cars worldwide in the second quarter. The climate crisis — as evidenced by the oppressive heat wave in the Pacific Northwest and fire in the Gulf of Mexico — is even more urgent.
