In the pre-pandemic world, this was set to be a Monday for distilling a new global order.

If their plans had materialized, President Donald Trump and his aides would have spent this past weekend celebrating a Group of Seven summit in which the world’s leading developed economies had forged a path toward a rebuilt alliance of market-driven nations led by the American example. Another retort to a China well on its way to being brought to heel. Another big accomplishment on the way to re-election and a second term of American greatness.
