Technology, Wealth and the Rockefellers
Hi all, it’s Yoolim in Singapore. Just a few days before Uber went public in New York, my colleague David Ramli and I attended a private event hosted by a prominent multi-family office.
For those unfamiliar with family offices, they are boutique asset managers that exclusively handle money for high net worth individuals. At the event, well-heeled folks from their 20s to 90s mingled with entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and portfolio managers. One of the speakers at the tony event was a young startup founder I got to know three years ago, who now runs a successful social media platform. Over chili-crab cake, barramundi and rendang beef, I learned his parents’ mansion was featured in "Crazy Rich Asians." And he spoke frankly about a falling-out with his father, a tycoon who just doesn’t get his business model.
