Newmont rejected Barrick's $17.8 billion hostile bid and proposed a joint venture linking the two companies' Nevada operations instead. CEO Gary Goldberg said that he was sticking with his plan to buy Goldcorp, and that his company could do a Nevada deal with Barrick to boot. He called its offer "desperate" and "bizarre."
