Labour May Struggle to Impress Voters Even If It Keeps Promises
Keir Starmer’s government has looked like a circus at times, but on some key targets it is making decent progress.
Britain’s Labour government has endured a sometimes-farcical few weeks, with a series of embarrassing U-turns that culminated in gilt market turmoil when Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves appeared to be crying during Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament.
One danger facing Keir Starmer is that the circus in Westminster, where he is struggling to control hundreds of unruly left-wing Members of Parliament, distracts voters from any underlying improvements in everyday British life. The polls are already ominous, with the ruling party trailing Nigel Farage’s right-wing Reform UK.
