The Gaza ceasefire announced on Wednesday night marks a tentative end to a 15-month conflict that’s left tens of thousands dead, far more homeless and Israel’s enemies across the Middle East reeling. But it’s a fragile reprieve.
The deal quickly ran into trouble in Israel, which accused Hamas of reneging on certain commitments, and far-right parties are examining ways to scuttle it. It isn’t clear how much jeopardy the agreement faces. That it got this far is the latest result of the Trump effect. The incoming US president has shaken global politics even before he takes office. Outgoing President Joe Biden can also claim credit for helping deliver a pact he originally outlined more than six months ago.
