The Cablebus Transformed Commutes in Mexico City’s Populous Outskirts

The aerial vehicles have become transportation for some 80,000 people a day as the city seeks to rapidly expand the system.

Since its opening three years ago, the longest cable car line in the world has offered spectacular views of Mexico City.

But contrary to what some might expect, the aerial transport system isn’t moving people to popular tourist destinations like Zocalo square or Bellas Artes Palace. Instead, the gondolas’ main purpose is to move people from isolated working-class neighborhoods to other transport systems such as the subway, which connect them to work, school, hospitals and other necessities.
