Where Boeing Went Wrong — and What the Company Needs to Fix

After two fatal crashes of its 737 Max airliner, a string of embarrassing quality-control snafus, and an almost catastrophic midair blowout, Boeing Co. is a company in serious need of a deep-rooted cultural overhaul. Lawmakers told Boeing Chief Executive Officer Dave Calhoun as much when they grilled him over the planemaker’s safety protocols and manufacturing glitches.

“You and your board of directors have a duty to your shareholders, but they will be deeply ill-served if you fail to correct course and confront the root cause of this broken safety culture,” said Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut and the chairman of the subcommittee holding the June 18 hearing. “For Boeing, it is a moment of reckoning.”
