Anatomy of a Bad Road
Perilous to cross and unpleasant to drive, ride or walk along, Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue badly needs a safety-minded makeover. Here’s how transportation advocates would do it.
On a Sunday evening in May, a 38-year-old delivery worker was fatally struck by an SUV driver after he lost control of his motor scooter at the corner of Clermont Avenue and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.
On a Friday night in October, Jose Ramos, a deaf man, was killed on his walk home from work by a hit-and-run driver at the corner of Essex Street and Atlantic, with his wife just next to him. A week later, Dyral Brown was killed by a speeding SUV driver late one Saturday night as he crossed Atlantic at Nostrand Avenue. He lived two blocks away.
