New York City’s transit system and Long Island Rail Road workers reached a potential labor agreement, ending a historic strike that suspended service on the largest commuter line in the US.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a state agency that oversees the city’s subway, bus and commuter rail lines, reached a tentative deal with five unions on wage increases, Governor Kathy Hochul late Monday posted on X before announcing the agreement at MTA headquarters. Some services will resume Tuesday at noon, just hours before the New York Knicks face the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden in the NBA Playoffs, an event that relies on the LIRR to get many Long Island fans to the stadium in Manhattan.
