Burnham Confirmed as Labour Pick for Vacant UK Parliament Seat
Andy Burnham has been confirmed as the Labour Party’s candidate in an election for a vacant House of Commons seat, a contest that will determine whether he can challenge Keir Starmer for the prime minister’s job.
The Greater Manchester mayor was selected on Tuesday as the candidate for the by-election in Makerfield, a Labour spokesperson said. If Burnham wins the constituency next month, he would return to the House of Commons as a member of Parliament, a prerequisite for an expected leadership challenge against Starmer.
