One of the Australian military’s oldest submarines will begin a refurbishment process as part of government efforts to ensure ongoing undersea naval power until the expected arrival of US-built nuclear vessels some time next decade.

The almost 30-year-old HMAS Farncomb submarine will begin its life extension at the end of May, Defence Minister Richard Marles said in a speech on Tuesday. The process is forecast to take around two years, based on parliamentary testimony in 2025, and should extend the boat’s operational life by 10 years.
