Spain’s Sánchez Hurt by Record Defeat in Socialist Stronghold
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez oversaw his party’s worst ever result in Andalusia’s regional election, dealing a blow to his hopes of pulling off a comeback victory in next year’s general election.
Spain’s biggest region has traditionally been a key part of any governing majority for Sánchez’s Socialists but their support there has been weakening since the premier came to power in 2018 through a deal with Catalan separatists, which angered voters in much of the rest of the country. The Socialists won a record-low 28 seats in Andalusia’s 109-strong regional chamber on Sunday.
