A New York state court judge ruled that prosecutors could use a gun and notebook seized from Luigi Mangione’s backpack against him at his trial for the killing of UnitedHealth Group Inc. executive Brian Thompson, but said that other evidence was improperly obtained.

Judge Gregory Carro said police had obtained a warrant when they seized evidence including a 9-millimeter gun and a notebook where Mangione discussed his desire to “wack” a CEO. But Carro said officers in Altoona, Pennsylvania, improperly searched his backpack earlier that day on Dec. 9, 2024, when they arrested him at a McDonald’s restaurant.
