Power prices are surging in the US East after the largest US grid operator declared an emergency as soaring temperatures descend on the region.

Electricity in the Washington DC suburbs that include power-hungry Data Center Alley has topped $1,000 per megawatt hour, almost four times the price across the broader region. Baltimore Gas & Electric prices were trading above $900 while Exelon’s Pepco service area was near $870.
