Violent clashes in Bolivia intensified with protesters squaring off against security forces as food shortages stoke anger and some opponents of President Rodrigo Paz call for his resignation.

Bolivia’s national labor union, highland farmer federations and supporters of socialist former President Evo Morales converged on La Paz, Bolivia’s political capital, on Monday to vent their frustrations with Paz’s six-month-old government. Some threw stones at police as fights with counter-protesters broke out. Security forces surrounded the government palace and hurled tear gas canisters to prevent protesters from storming the building, though some managed to enter the main courthouse and could be seen taking chairs.
