If Angela Rayner succeeds Keir Starmer as Britain’s next prime minister, it will complete a remarkable political ascent to the top job by the self-described “proper working-class woman.”

The former deputy premier’s pathway to power opened up on Thursday when she announced she’d been cleared by the UK’s tax authorities of deliberate wrongdoing in a scandal over a house purchase. She marked it by giving a half-hour interview with ITV, concluding “I am a fighter and I will keep fighting.”
