India is examining the circumstances of an attack on a cargo vessel that caught fire before sinking in the Gulf of Oman, according to officials familiar with the matter.

India’s Shipping Ministry announced on Thursday that the MVS Haji Ali, an Indian-flagged wooden ship, was attacked a day earlier while en route from Somalia to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. More than a dozen crew members were rescued by the Omani Coast Guard after the vessel sank, it said. India’s Ministry of External Affairs condemned the incident and called it “unacceptable.”
