Angela Rayner, the UK’s former deputy prime minister, has been cleared of deliberate wrongdoing by an investigation into her tax affairs and is preparing for a potential leadership bid against her former boss, Keir Starmer.

Rayner was cleared by the British tax authority, HM Revenue & Customs, of carelessness or deliberate wrongdoing and has settled £40,000 ($54,000) in unpaid stamp duty, a spokesperson said on Thursday. She hasn’t had to pay a penalty as a result of the probe into the taxes paid on the purchase of a second home in southern England, the spokesperson said.
