Senators Advance Resolution to Block Their Pay During Shutdowns
Senators would forgo their pay during future government shutdowns under a measure that just cleared a key initial procedural hurdle on the floor Wednesday.
The Senate voted 99-0 to advance the resolution (S. Res. 526) from Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) that would delay paying senators when there’s a funding lapse, starting after November’s midterm elections. Senators pitched the resolution, which would only affect the Senate and still needs to be adopted, as having the potential to help prevent reoccurring spending fights that lead to government shutdowns.
