A defiant Keir Starmer pushed back against widespread calls for him to quit as Britain’s prime minister, telling his Cabinet that he wouldn’t step down without a leadership fight.

In a high-stakes meeting with his most senior ministers on Tuesday, Starmer said efforts by members of Parliament to force him out in the wake of last week’s disastrous local election results has been “destabilizing” and had had an economic cost for the country. The prime minister noted that no potential rival had announced a bid to challenge him.
