Angolan leader João Lourenço informed the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola that he plans to seek another term as party chief before his second presidential term ends in 2027, Jornal de Angola reported.

Retaining the top MPLA spot in December would enable Lourenço to retain influence within the party — and potentially the country should it remain in power — using a model known in Angola as “bicefalia,” or dual leadership, in which the head of the ruling party and the president are different people.
