Christian Schmidt, the top international envoy to Bosnia-Herzegovina who was charged with guiding the country to a stable postwar future, is leaving his post.

Schmidt, a former German cabinet minister and lawmaker, has held the position for almost five years. A spokesperson for Schmidt’s Office of the High Representative confirmed his decision, which was reported earlier Sunday by Sarajevo-based Oslobodjenje.
